How to scope the first version of a custom app
Prioritise core features, users and acceptance criteria before adding every idea to the build.
05 October 2026A first release is not a weak release; it is the smallest product that performs the core job well. Describe the primary user, their problem and the task they must complete from start to finish.
Group features into launch essentials, improvements after user feedback, and ideas that can wait. A booking system might initially need available slots, confirmation and a simple admin view; an elaborate loyalty programme can follow actual usage.
Decide who owns content and data, and whether payments, messages or multiple permission levels are required. Write a testable acceptance criterion for each feature: a customer can book an available slot, the team can see it, and the same slot cannot be booked twice.
After launch, review inquiries, errors and usage before planning the next phase. This reduces rework and makes time and budget clearer for everyone.
